Pune Zoo |

The Pune Municipal Corporation had established Peshwe Park Zoo in 1953 on approx.
7 acres of land at the base of Parvati hill, where Madhavrao Peshwa had his private
menagerie in 1780. With an objective of providing bigger, better and naturalistic
enclosures, this zoo is now shifted to new site at Katraj. Today new zoo is coming
up on approx. 165 acres of land and is popularly known as Rajiv Gandhi Zoological
Park & Wildlife Research Center.
The main objective of creating this zoo is
- Ex-situ conservation of critically endangered fauna with special focus on the fauna
belonging to the Western Ghats.
- To propagate and inculcate a sense of responsibility in visitors about conservation
of our precious biodiversity through education and interpretation.
- To promote and carry out wildlife research related activities.
The theme of the zoo is “Conservation through Education”. This zoo is fast emerging
as a Conservation Education Center. We are trying to inculcate a sense of responsibility
in visitors about conservation of our precious biodiversity. This will help to establish
a strong symbolic and harmonious relationship between Man and Biosphere on a sustainable
basis.
