OVERVIEW & FUNCTIONING

The Projects department is working towards achieving Pune City’s Mobility Goal of “To focus on moving people safely and economically by emphasizing sustainable modes of travel like public transport and non-motorized transport” it means “move people, not vehicles By emphasizing the pre-eminence of Public Transport & Non Motorized Transport. The department has worked on preparation of various policy documents like Parking, Pedestrian (Smart Walk), Heavy Vehicle movement in the city, etc. It progressively works on the financial year budget allocation for planning, design, development/implementation, maintenance of various traffic & transportation projects. Some of the projects include junction design, on street/ off street parking, truck terminals, flyovers, bridges, Rail over bridges (ROB’s), subways and carrying out various traffic surveys, feasibility studies including comprehensive bi-cycle network plan, for details www.punecycleplan.wordpress.com. We have pursued Pune metro project with Government of Maharashtra and Government of India for the sanction of Phase-I.

The Traffic Department gives its opinion on naming of the new transport facilities like streets, junctions, flyovers, RoBs, bridges, subways and parking lots based on approved guidelines.

We are working on detailed project report (DPR) for 44 km Mula, Mutha& Mula-Mutha and 12 km Ramnadi River front development projects and more than nine government departments are involved in project preparation. Please refer www.puneriverfront.com for further details.

This department is also constructing 3752 houses for relocation of slum dwellers, who are residing at fragile ecological areas like along river/nala banks, hill top, etc., and assisting 4000 slum dwellers to construct in-situ houses either on their own or with the help of Non Government Officers (NGO’s).

Projects department is headed by Chief Engineer (Projects) and works under the control of Additional Municipal Commissioner (Spl). The technical staff is mainly comprises of Civil Engineers, and some of the officers are with post graduation qualifications in Transportation Planning, High way Engineering, Construction & Management and Environmental engineering.

Responsibilities of the Department

The main function of this department is to construct the flyovers & bridges on the river in congested chowks of Pune city and rehabilitation of old bridges. Following that additional function of the traffic department in addition to constructing Bridges and flyovers:

  • Prepares pedestrian policy
  • Prepare and Execute Pune Bicycle Plan (NMT Cell)
  • Construct the Foot Over Bridge (FOB) & Subways
  • Development of Parking lots / implementation of parking policy
  • Construction & maintenance of mechanised car parking
  • Pay & Parking scheme on roads
  • Naming of roads & chowks / junctions by coordinating with Nav Samittee of Pune Municipal Corporation
  • Pune Metro
  • River front Improvement
  • Rehabilitation & construction of houses, street vendors, dormitories & instil rehabilitation for urban poors under the BSUP scheme of JNNURM.
